City Makes a U-turn on U-turns |
Last month, I brought a recommendation from the Economic Development Board to remove the U-turn signs at 1st and Main to the Council. The board came up with the idea while brainstorming on ways to improve our vistor-friendly downtown atmosphere, and one idea was to find ways to improve traffic flow on Main Street.
We all know it was a bit cumbersome to turn around on Main with the U-turn restrictions and often the restrictions lead to more danagerous traffic patterns such as turning around in parking lots or making J-turns in the middle of the block.
This change should help you better menuver in downtown. Be sure to make safe U-turns now that they are permitted at the First and Main intersection so residents and vistors can enjoy this change as a permenant one. Finally, be sure to note that crossing a double-yellow line or not observing a posted no U-turn sign is still a violation of city law and you can receive a ticket for it.

Buhler Libraries Grow, Expand Services |
If one wasn't enough, Buhler has two libraries, each with unique offerings. The Buhler High School library will start a pilot program beginning this year adding extended hours each Thursday evening. The BHS library will remain open until 8:30 to allow students and citizens extra time to utilize the school's media facilities including computer, book, and research study. Contact the high school's media specialist, Melva Barlow, for more information:

. The even bigger news is the Buhler Library was recently able to purchase the old glider rocker building at 2nd and Main through a substantial donation from Dave and Pat Franz of Frederick, MD, both natives of Buhler. Dr. David R. Franz grew up in town and used the library extensively as a child. He attributes his early education and appreciation for learning in part to the influence of the library. Dr. Franz is the Vice President & Chief Biological Scientist for Midwest Research Institute and the Senior Advisor for Biosecurity Engagement, Office of the Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Defense Programs. The Buhler Library is listed on a nationally recognized list of excelling libraries. The new expansion will help the library capitalize on these successes and add many new programs and services for Buhler.
Congratulations to the library and our utmost thanks to Dave and Pat Franz!

It's census time all over the nation including right here in Buhler. In the coming weeks you will be recieving a letter in the mail with 10 quick questions. Fill it out please! It's very important for a community our size to get every resident counted. Each resident counts and equates to funding dollars, congress seats, and overall important community data. Local residents will be assisting this effort and will likely swing by your way if you don't mail in the form!
Special thanks to former Mayor Marlo Oltman who is heading up Buhler's census effort. Contact the city office for more information.

County Revamping 82nd - in part |
I recieved word last week from the county that the widening and hill reduction project of 82nd street west of town is due to begin sometime in late spring. However, one thing I didn't realize is that the project will only extend to Kent Road. That's about 2 miles of road work. That also means the flood area near the "S" curves will not be addressed. I was disappointed to hear the road work would not extend all the way to K-61 but any progress to making 82nd a safer and easier travel to Buhler is welcome.
I will be contacting the County about ways to get the rest of 82nd street completed. Please email me with your comments on this issue.

Starting March 1st 2010 the city of Buhler, in partnership with its refuse collector Stuzmans Refuse, will begin offering single stream recycling services.
What does this mean? This means no more blue bags and easier recylcing. Each resident will have an option to get an additional recycling cart that can be used to put ALL recyclables in. That means no more sorting and again, no more blue bags. This service will be free to residents and businesses. In exchange for this free service, residents will no longer have the option to have extra bag pickup. If a resident needs additional trash pickup, an additional cart must be purchased. Most residents who participate in the recycling program will notice a significant decrease in the total volume of trash they put in the trash cart each week. So, the trade off should be a postive one.
